Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about getting free NHS contraception online.
What is NHS pharmacy contraception and who can get it?
It's a free NHS service that lets you get the combined pill or the mini pill from a pharmacy instead of your GP. It's open to anyone who can safely take the oral contraceptive pill, whether you're starting for the first time or already taking it.
Do I have to pay for my contraceptive pill?
No. Oral contraception is free on the NHS for eligible patients, including the pill itself. There's no consultation fee.
Can I get the pill without seeing a GP?
Yes. You answer a short set of health questions online and a registered pharmacist reviews them. There's no GP appointment or waiting list.
Can I get contraception if I'm not registered with a GP?
Yes. You don't need to be registered with a GP to use the NHS pharmacy contraception service.
Is my consultation confidential?
Yes. Your answers are only seen by our pharmacy team, and we follow NHS confidentiality and UK data protection rules.
How quickly will I receive my pill?
Once a pharmacist approves your request, your pill is sent out in plain, discreet packaging. We'll keep you updated by email at each step.
Which contraceptive pill is right for me?
The combined pill contains oestrogen and progestogen; the mini pill contains progestogen only. Your health answers help the pharmacist confirm which is safe for you, and they can talk you through the options.
Can I switch pills if mine doesn't suit me?
Yes. Get in touch with our team and a pharmacist can review your options and, where appropriate, switch you to a different pill.
How do repeat orders work?
We remind you before you run out, so you can reorder a 3 or 6 month supply in a few clicks without starting again.
Do you offer emergency contraception?
Emergency contraception isn't available through Pill By Post. If you need it, contact a local pharmacy, your GP or NHS 111 as soon as possible.
